Honsberger Winery

TO YOUR TABLE

It takes a lot of heart to make a small batch of wine, but we do it for the love of the craft. Our hands on approach is evident in the character of our wine, the character of our property and the character of the people who make Honsberger Estate. Wine can make strangers become friends and friends become family.

The History - Farm & Wine

The Honsberger family are sixth generation farmers and they have been farming since 1811. Therefore, the heritage and history of the land has been in Barb’s family for years.

In 2002, cherry trees were removed to plant Cab Franc and apple trees removed to plant Riesling. Currently, there are 8 acres of Cabernet Franc (near Jordan Road) and 3 acres of Riesling (near the back of the property / directly across from the tasting room). In 2012, the family decided to hold back a portion of their 11 acres of grape production to make their own wine. The remaining grapes off the site are sold to other wineries.

Our Flagship Wines

2017 Rosé

Our Rosé is made from Cabernet Franc and the grapes are handpicked around the second to last week in October. We press the fruit immediately and fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Post primary fermentation, the Rosé ages in French oak (a 500L puncheon) and also in stainless steel. We bottle late in the spring following the harvest.

The nose of the 2017 Rosé shows a mix of melon (cantaloupe), cherry and strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied and follows through with cherry, cranberry, red berries and finishes clean and crisp.

2016 Cabernet Franc

Our Cabernet Franc is picked around the first week in November. We farm our rows a little differently than the rest of the vineyard. The Cabernet Franc vines that we hold back for Honsberger wine are pruned to two canes (double guyot) and we leaf pull and green harvest these rows where necessary. We hand pick all of our Cabernet Franc and hand sort it as well. It is fermented using both commercial and indigenous yeasts and ageing takes place in French oak barrels for 18 months. We are focused on always making a balanced wine.

The nose of the 2016 Cabernet Franc shows cherry, plum and ripe blackberries with good structure on the mid-palate and notes of tobacco.

Winemaking Data for the 2016:
Retail Price: $32.00

2015 Cabernet Franc Reserve

This is a limited production that is done only In vintages that show lots of promise. We hold back the best barrels, or combination thereof from the lot and age the wine for an additional year. Our Reserve has been aged in French Oak for about 32 months. The best barrel selection usually shows depth of fruit concentration within a great tannin structure, thus having the ability to age longer and develop further.

The 2015 Cabernet Franc Reserve is our second vintage to produce a Reserve (2012 was our first vintage). We still have about 5 cases left of the 2012 vintage for sale. We bottled the 2015 Cabernet Franc Reserve in March of 2018 and it was released June 2018.
